Let's walk and talk about our shared concern- relationship violence.

In 2024, the LOVR team decided to relook at how we organised our yearly community walk/run as we wanted to reach out to more students!  We decided to invite student advocates who were keen to organise informal walks/runs on their campuses. This was all done informally and autonomy was given to students to decide how they wanted to do the event and who they wanted to invite along!

In addition to the campus community walk/run, we also invited student groups to have conversations. Relationship violence can happen to anyone and we believe it is our shared concern to dialogue about this issue to raise awareness. We believe that:

  1. Relationship violence can happen to anyone. This can happen between romantic partners or in the context of academic work, hostel residential life, extracurricular activities on campus with acquaintances or strangers.

  2. When traumatic stress is not processed, it is transmitted and it affects our mental well-being and ability to relate to others healthily.

  3. It is everybody’s business to dialogue, build shared concern about the issue and foster respectful relationships for a safe campus environment for learning.

We kickstarted our campaign in January 2025. We recruited interested students from polytechnics and universities to lead a community run/walk on or around campus! All they needed to do was to find a group of friends to walk/run on campus, design a route and complete it anytime during the period of 10 to 12 January 2025. We provided teams with a conversation guide to create space and dialogue about the issue of relationship violence. Unfortunately, we encountered monsoon weather and some groups had to find indoor locations for the community walk. That didn't dampen their spirits! Besides having time to bond and enjoy each other's company, participants also shared that they had positive experiences dialoguing about the issue.

We raised a total of $27,930.

We had student participants from National University of Singapore, Singapore Management University, Temasek Junior College, Tampines Meridian Junior College, Singapore University of Social Sciences, Singapore Institute of Management and University of Nebraska-Omaha (USA).

It was comforting knowing people from the other side of the world go through similar challenges and also having more knowledge and language to talk about what relationship harm can look like in our day to day lives. I became more aware of it in my own at least

It was a fulfilling experience and I enjoyed the conversations which I shared with my friends about the given pointers. I realised that I had barely talked about the topic of relationship violence with my friends, and it was unfamiliar yet interesting to both share my opinion and hear my friends' opinions about it. Walking while having conversations allowed me to be able to share my thoughts with less pressure.

Where all three of us shared the sense of guilt concerning accidentally hurting people before, I think it was very eye-opening to realise that it was a shared experience and not only for me. It made me feel like I’m not that bad of a person and made me feel more human
